Duas and dhikr

Daily duas and dhikr for pilgrims

Supplications and dhikr pilgrims often need, from home to the Holy Land, each with Arabic, transliteration and meaning. The Arabic is copied directly from the official source linked under each one. Transliteration is only a pronunciation aid — learn the correct recitation from a teacher.

Leaving home and setting off

The Federal Territory Mufti encourages supplication before and during travel, near or far, including when boarding a vehicle such as a plane.

When leaving home

Said when stepping out of the house (hadith of Anas ibn Malik, narrated by Abu Dawud 5095).

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except through Allah.

The travel supplication (as the vehicle sets off)

Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said it when his mount set off on a journey (narrated by Muslim 1342). Its opening is from Surah az-Zukhruf 43:13–14.

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Subhanal-ladzi sakhkhara lana hadza wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadzal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tardha. Allahumma hawwin 'alaina safarana hadza, wathwi 'anna bu'dah. Allahumma antas-sahibu fis-safar, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl. Allahumma inni a'udzu bika min wa'tha'is-safar, wa ka'abatil-manzar, wa su'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahl.

Allah is the Greatest! Allah is the Greatest! Allah is the Greatest! Glory be to the One who has placed this at our service, for we could never have done so ourselves, and to our Lord we shall surely return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family left behind. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from distressing sights, and from an ill return to property and family.

Entering and leaving the mosque

This applies at the Sacred Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque and every other mosque. The Federal Territory Mufti (citing al-Fiqh al-Manhaji and al-Nawawi): entering with the right foot and saying the supplication for entering is recommended at every mosque. Before sitting, pray two rak‘ahs (hadith narrated by al-Bukhari).

When entering the mosque

Hadith of Abu Humayd or Abu Usayd, narrated by Muslim.

Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatik.

O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.

When leaving the mosque

From the same hadith (narrated by Muslim), said on leaving.

Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadhlik.

O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty.

Dhikr after the obligatory prayers

The Federal Territory Mufti: dhikr and supplication after the obligatory prayers are strongly encouraged — the end of an obligatory prayer is among the times a supplication is most heard (narrated by at-Tirmidhi). There is no need to rise in haste; begin by praising Allah and sending blessings on the Prophet, then ask for whatever you need.

Seeking forgiveness three times, then “Allahumma antas-salam”

Thawban reported that on finishing the prayer the Prophet (peace be upon him) sought forgiveness three times, then said this (narrated by Muslim).

Allahumma antas-salam, wa minkas-salam, tabarakta dzal-jalali wal-ikram.

O Allah, You are as-Salam (Peace), and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of majesty and honour.

Tahlil and “none can withhold what You give”

Al-Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said this after finishing the prayer with the salam (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. O Allah, none can withhold what You give, none can give what You withhold, and the wealth and standing of their owner avail nothing against You.

Tasbih, tahmid and takbir 33 times, completed to 100

Abu Hurayrah (narrated by Muslim): after every prayer, say Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu akbar 33 times (99 in all), then complete the hundred with the words below; one’s sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.

There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things.

Ayat al-Kursi (the Throne Verse)

The Federal Territory Mufti: recommended after every obligatory prayer, based on the hadith of Abu Umamah (graded authentic by Ibn Hibban). Surah al-Baqarah 2:255.

Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

The Federal Territory Mufti cites Ibn al-Qayyim: each chain of this hadith has a weakness, but together they strengthen one another; Ibn Hibban graded it authentic.

Morning and evening dhikr

One short dhikr whose official source was read for this guide. Seeking forgiveness has many wordings and is not limited to one (Federal Territory Mufti).

Sayyid al-Istighfar (the best way to seek forgiveness)

Hadith of Shaddad ibn Aws (narrated by al-Bukhari): whoever says it by day with conviction and dies before evening, or by night and dies before morning, is among the people of Paradise.

O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I hold to Your covenant and Your promise as far as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin to You, so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.

When drinking Zamzam water

The Federal Territory Mufti: the Prophet (peace be upon him) said Zamzam water “is for whatever it is drunk for” (narrated by Ibn Majah), and al-Nawawi says it is recommended to drink it in plenty.

Ibn ‘Abbas’s supplication when drinking Zamzam

The practice of the Companion Ibn ‘Abbas (narrated by al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak), not wording taught directly by the Prophet. The Arabic is copied as it appears in the source.

Allahumma as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan wasi'an, wa syifa'an min kulli da'.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision and healing from every illness.

Status of the hadith “Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for”: al-Nawawi (al-Majmu‘) graded al-Bayhaqi’s narration weak; al-Hakim and al-Suyuti graded it authentic, and Ibn Hajar held it usable as proof through all its chains. The Federal Territory Mufti inclines to authentic or good (hasan).

General supplications from the Quran

These supplications are verses of the Quran; the Arabic is from quran.com and the meanings are the Abdullah Muhammad Basmeih (Malay) / Saheeh International (English) translations on quran.com, trimmed to the supplication itself. They may be said at any time, including during tawaf, sa‘i and the standing at Arafah.
