Ihram and miqat
Is a man in the state of ihram allowed to use an umbrella, given that the head must not be covered?
Answer in brief
A man in ihram is forbidden to cover his head with something without a valid reason. Doing so is sinful and requires a fidyah. If the head is covered because of a need such as heat, cold or medical treatment, it is permitted but the fidyah is still obligatory. Taking shade under an umbrella, a wall or a camel howdah is not considered covering the head, so it is not forbidden and no dam is due, even if it touches the head.
