Answer in brief

Standing at Arafah

What is the ruling on fasting on the Day of Arafah for a person who is performing Hajj?

Answer in brief

Fasting on the Day of Arafah is recommended for those who are resident, strong and healthy, as it is promised forgiveness of sins for the year before and the year after. For pilgrims performing Hajj, fasting is not recommended and they are encouraged to break their fast so that they have the strength to make supplication on that day. A pilgrim who only reaches Arafah at night is recommended to fast that day. Those who break the fast at Arafah to strengthen themselves for worship are still rewarded like those who fast.
