Hajj and umrah on behalf of others
What is the ruling on performing badal haji for a person who was physically healthy and capable but died without performing the pilgrimage?
Answer in brief
Badal haji is permissible according to the majority of jurists for a person who has died without performing Hajj, or for someone with an incurable illness. It is not valid for someone who is still able to perform it personally. The proxy must have performed Hajj for himself first, and it is preferable that the closest relatives carry it out. If no relative does so, another trustworthy and knowledgeable person may be hired.
