Dam and fidyah (expiation)
When is the proper time to slaughter the tamattu' dam, and are all tamattu' pilgrims required to pay it?
Answer in brief
The tamattu' dam is due when a person performs umrah during the Hajj season, then enters ihram for Hajj in the same year without leaving Mecca as far as the distance that permits shortening prayers. Some pilgrims are exempt: residents of the Haram area, those living less than two marhalah from it (about 91 kilometres), those who leave to enter ihram for Hajj at the miqat, those who travel two marhalah or more to intend Hajj and then enter Mecca, and those who perform umrah outside the Hajj months. For those who owe the dam, it may be offered at any time after the tahallul of umrah, and the best time is the Day of Nahar. It is not allowed before the tahallul of umrah and must be slaughtered within the Haram.
