Answer in brief

Ability, finances and the hajj queue

What does ability mean in the context of Hajj, and what is the difference between being able by oneself and being able with the help of others?

Answer in brief

Hajj and umrah are obligatory only for those who are capable and able, either by themselves or with the help of others. Personal ability covers provisions and maintenance for oneself and one's dependants, transport to and from the Holy Land, a journey that is safe from enemies and epidemics, good physical health, and sufficient time. Ability through others applies to a person who meets all the conditions but is unable due to illness with no hope of recovery or extreme old age, and to a deceased person who had the means during his lifetime. These individuals may appoint someone else to perform the obligatory Hajj on their behalf.
