Answer in brief

General rulings on hajj and umrah

Does an accepted pilgrimage (hajj mabrur) erase sins related to obligations and the rights of others, such as deliberately delaying the repayment of a debt?

Answer in brief

Scholars differ on this matter. According to al-Zayyadi, an accepted hajj forgives major sins, minor sins and sins involving the rights of others, provided the person dies during the hajj or after it before being able to fulfil those rights. Al-Syabramallisi held that an accepted hajj does not remove the rights of others or the liability for debts. A person who lives on after performing hajj must make up missed prayers and settle the rights of others, such as returning stolen property and paying debts. Only Allah SWT knows whether a hajj is accepted, so it should not be used as an excuse to avoid repentance or to delay settling debts, which should be cleared before departing for hajj.

Namun sekiranya dia hidup selepas melaksanakan ibadah haji, maka hendaklah dia melunaskan segala kewajipan seperti qada solat dan melangsaikan hak-hak orang lain ke atas dirinya seperti memulangkan barang dicurinya, membayar hutang-hutang yang tertangguh dan seumpamanya.
