Answer in brief

General rulings on hajj and umrah

Is it proper to ask a person returning from Hajj or Umrah to make dua for you?

Answer in brief

Asking a person who has returned from Hajj or Umrah to pray for oneself is recommended (sunat). The practice rests on the Prophet's encouragement for Muslims to pray for one another and on the belief that the supplications of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims are answered by Allah. The fatwa notes the stronger view that the salaf asked pilgrims for dua for up to forty days, especially before they entered their homes. Recommended manners include visiting them, greeting them with salam, shaking hands and kissing between the eyes before requesting the dua.
