Answer in brief

Ability, finances and the hajj queue

What are the conditions and types of ability (istitha'ah) required of a person to perform Hajj and Umrah?

Answer in brief

A person is considered able if he has enough wealth for transport, round-trip expenses, a passport and the fees of a Hajj guide, and this wealth is in excess of his debts and the maintenance of the family left behind. He must also be physically healthy and the journey must be safe for life and property. A woman must be accompanied by a mahram or a trustworthy woman. If there is real fear for safety, such as from robbers, epidemics or seizure of property, Hajj is not obligatory on him. Ability is of two kinds: direct ability, where one can perform the rites personally, and indirect ability, where one has the means to hire someone else to perform Hajj on his behalf because of old age or illness.
