Answer in brief

Women, menstruation and mahram

What is the ruling on blood that appears after a woman has been confirmed menopausal while she is performing Hajj?

Answer in brief

In the Shafi'i school, blood that appears after menopause is treated as menstrual blood if it lasts longer than the minimum of one day and night and does not exceed the maximum of 15 days. Blood that does not meet these conditions is ruled to be istihadah. If a menopausal woman bleeds during Hajj and the bleeding may continue until she returns home, she is permitted to adopt the view that it is istihadah, on the basis of hardship. Her prayers, tawaf and similar acts performed during that period are considered valid.
